Answers to common questions about the practice, the work, and what to expect.

Getting Started

Psychodynamic therapy tends to be well-suited for people who are curious about themselves, who sense that their difficulties have deeper roots than they fully understand, and who are willing to engage in an exploratory process over time. It is particularly effective for depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, and a persistent sense of dissatisfaction or unfulfilled potential. An initial consultation is the best way to explore whether this approach fits your needs.

The initial consultation is an opportunity for us to meet, for you to describe what has brought you to seek help, and for me to begin to understand your history and circumstances. It is also a chance for you to ask questions and to get a sense of whether working together feels right. There is no obligation to continue after an initial meeting.

Psychodynamic therapy is an open-ended treatment — its duration depends on the nature and depth of the concerns being addressed, and on the goals the patient brings to the work. Some people find that a year or two of regular sessions produces meaningful change; others engage in longer-term work. This is something we would discuss and revisit together over the course of treatment.

Sessions & Format

After the initial evaluation, treatment recommendations will be discussed depending on the nature of the work and the patient's needs and circumstances. More frequent sessions often allow for deeper and more sustained engagement with the material.

Standard therapy sessions are 50 minutes in length.

At times, telehealth sessions would be made available on a case by case basis for patients who are located in New York State.  In-person sessions are the preferred modality available at the New York City office located at 303 Fifth Avenue (corner of 31st Street and Fifth Avenue).

Fees & Insurance

Dr. Chablani is an out-of-network provider. Many patients with PPO insurance plans are able to seek reimbursement for a portion of session fees through their out-of-network benefits. I am happy to provide a superbill (an itemized receipt) that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. I recommend contacting your insurance provider before beginning treatment to understand your out-of-network mental health benefits.

Fees are discussed during the initial consultation. Please reach out directly to inquire.

Confidentiality & Privacy

Yes. Everything discussed in sessions is strictly confidential. There are narrow legal exceptions — for example, if there is imminent risk of harm to yourself or others — but these are rare and would be discussed with you. Confidentiality is foundational to the therapeutic relationship, and I take it seriously.
